FAQ

– WHAT IS A TINY HOUSE?

Opinions range on what exactly a tiny house is. For us and many others it seems under 400 square feet is commonly considered a tiny house. Whether it is mobile (built on a trailer) or on a permanent foundation.

– WHY GO TINY?

There are many reasons people choose to go tiny. A few of them are financial freedom, less is more outlook, mobility with the comfort of bringing your home with you, general downsizing, vacation home or other part time dwelling, the experience of building your own home, off grid living and of course lessening your carbon footprint.

– WHY NOT AN RV?

An RV doesn’t offer the feel and look of a traditional stick build home as tiny houses do. Customization as well as better insulation and less toxic materials used in the building process are also reasons tiny homes appeal to some people over RV living.

– HOW BIG WILL YOUR TINY HOUSE BE?

Just over 200 square feet on the main floor. Without including our sleeping and storage loft.

– HOW TALL, WIDE AND LONG WILL IT BE?

The trailer itself is 8′ 6″ wide by 28′ long (not including a 5ft long tung), in California the height restriction is 14′ from the ground.

– HOW MUCH WILL IT WEIGH?

Our trailer will have the ability to handle a weight of 14,000lbs, the house will be about 10,000lbs and the trailer itself 2,000lbs.

– WHERE ARE YOU BUILDING/PARKING THE HOUSE?

We will be building the house on our family’s property in Northern California. Hoping later to move it to Petaluma possibly on someone else’s property.

– WHO ARE YOU HAVING DESIGN AND BUILD YOUR HOUSE?

We have drawn up our own designs and will be building the entire house ourselves with the exception of some help from family and friends.

– WHAT IS YOUR ANTICIPATED TIMELINE?

Since we are sourcing reclaimed materials which can be time consuming, yet have prior building experience we are estimating 6-12 months. Hopefully six months, fingers crossed, putting us right around Christmas 2015!

– WHAT IS THE ESTIMATED COST/BUDGET?

With utilizing as many salvaged materials as we can and building every bit of the home together, we estimate between 15-20K for our project.

– WHAT ABOUT PLUMBING AND ELECTRICITY?

It will be a simple plumbing set up with one pipe going into the house pumping clean water from a garden hose to our sinks and shower and one pipe leading out of the house expelling the grey water to be collected and then used to water trees/shrubbery on the property. Black water or sewage is not a concern since we will be utilizing a self built composting toilet system. As for electricity we are hoping to use solar and have the option to plug into an electrical outlet as well.
